9x9 Bedroom Layout: What Actually Fits, Measured
A 9x9 foot bedroom is 81 square feet of floor. In the room measured here, a queen bed does not fit with two nightstands; the largest bed that does is a full, and a queen fits with one nightstand.
The short answer: With the queen bed measured here, 66 1/8 inches wide, and a nightstand 2 inches from each side, a 9x9 bedroom has no layout that clears the door: wherever the bed goes, the door swings into it. With one nightstand, the queen fits comfortably, with every walk at 36 inches or wider. Add a dresser and the recommended layout narrows to 24 inches. With a desk instead of the dresser, the recommended layout keeps every walk at 21 inches or wider. A dresser and a desk together fit in 1 of 612 arrangements, with every walk at 21 inches or wider. A full bed takes two nightstands, but then leaves no usable place for a dresser or a desk; a twin bed takes two nightstands, a dresser and a desk.

Which bed size fits a 9x9 room
- Twin: fits with a nightstand on each side, narrowest walk 29 inches; a dresser and a desk fit as well.
- Full: fits with a nightstand on each side, narrowest walk 24 inches; add a dresser and a desk and no layout is usable.
- Queen: no usable layout with two nightstands; with one nightstand, a dresser and a desk it fits, narrowest walk 21 inches.
- King: no usable layout with two nightstands; with one nightstand it fits, narrowest walk 30 inches, but not with a dresser and a desk as well.

Why a queen bed and two nightstands do not fit
Side by side, the queen bed and a nightstand on each side, 2 inches from the frame, take up 106 3/8 inches of wall, and every wall in this room is 108 inches long, so they can shift only 1 5/8 inches along a wall. At every one of those positions, on every wall, the door swings into the bed. Pushed flush against the frame, with no gap at all, they would clear the door, but only within a band of positions less than an inch wide on two of the four walls. A narrower frame would fit: at this length, with the same two nightstands, anything up to 65 inches wide clears the door. A queen mattress is 60 inches wide, and at that width it does fit here; pages that size this room from the mattress are leaving out the frame around it. The queen layouts below use one nightstand.
The best layout with a queen bed
With one nightstand, this is the recommended layout.
- One side of the bed: 41 7/8 inches free.
- The other side stands against the wall.
- At the foot of the bed: 24 7/8 inches free.
- Every walk from the door is at least 36 inches wide.
A queen bed, a dresser and a desk
With two nightstands there is no arrangement at all: the bed and nightstands alone do not fit. With one nightstand, 1 of 612 arrangements is usable and none is comfortable. That one narrows to 21 inches on the way to the desk.
The layout that looks fine and is not
This arrangement of a full bed, two nightstands and a dresser leaves 24 1/2 inches or more on each open side of the bed, more than the 18 inches this page asks for, so it passes the bed-side check. The problem is getting there: the walk to one side of the bed narrows to 7 inches. A tape measure along the side of the bed would not catch it.
What a full or twin bed buys you
A full bed takes two nightstands, but then leaves no usable place for a dresser or a desk. With one nightstand, a dresser and a desk both fit: 13 of 3,286 arrangements are usable, and the recommended one keeps every walk at 28 inches or wider, but it is tight: the desk chair gets less than 30 inches. A twin bed takes two nightstands, a dresser and a desk: 83 of 3,038 arrangements are usable, and the recommended one keeps every walk at 21 inches or wider.

The room is 108 inches by 108 inches, wall to wall. It has one door, 30 inches wide, that opens into the room, with its opening starting 6 inches from a corner, and one window, 36 inches wide, centered on the opposite wall. In every arrangement, each nightstand stands 2 inches from the bed.
